LEFT OF THE DIAL – HET CONCEPT IN 2018
Toen we met Left of the Dial begonnen, dachten we dat het een goed idee zou zijn om niet alleen de beste nieuwe artiesten een podium te bieden, maar om ook om een paar wat meer gevestigde namen uit te nodigen – bands waar wij zelf al jarenlang fan van zijn. Om zo de jongere festivalbezoekers de kans te geven bands te zien die voor veel Left of the Dial-artiesten een inspiratiebron zijn geweest en tegelijkertijd zou het voor Left of the Dial-artiesten mooi zijn om op dezelfde line-up te staan als hun helden. We hebben het elk jaar echt geprobeerd, maar op de een of andere manier is het ons nooit gelukt om dat concept in de praktijk te brengen. Tot nu.

LES SAVY FAV
Een paar dagen geleden kregen we te horen dat Les Savy Fav op zoek is naar een show in Rotterdam op 25 oktober, wat dus de Left of the Dial-zaterdag is.

We zijn al jaren grote fans van Les Savy Fav en het optreden dat ze in 2007 in onze eigen zaal Rotown gaven, is een van de meest memorabele shows die we ooit hebben gehad. Hun liveoptredens zijn sowieso behoorlijk spectaculair en naar onze bescheiden mening zijn veel huidige artiesten redelijk schatplichtig aan deze New Yorkse artrockband. Kortom, we zouden ze er heel graag bij hebben op Left of the Dial!

LASTIGE KWESTIES 
Maar dat brengt ons bij een paar lastige kwesties. Ten eerste hebben we een duidelijk ‘geen headliners-beleid’. Alle artiesten zijn altijd even belangrijk voor ons geweest, en dat zal ook altijd zo blijven.

Ten tweede hebben we geen idee wat er gaat gebeuren als we deze oudgedienden gewoon in het blokkenschema zetten. Misschien zijn jullie tijdens het festival veel liever bezig met het ontdekken van nieuwe bands en zouden jullie de show van Les Savy Fav overslaan Of erger, misschien wil juist iedereen erbij zijn en staan er straks lange rijen en komen er boze gezichten omdat de zaal te snel vol is. Dat willen we natuurlijk allemaal niet. 

EXTRA TICKET
Dus dit is hoe we het hebben bedacht:

• Les Savy Fav speelt zaterdagavond een late night show in een van de Left of the Dial-zalen;
• Alléén Left of the Dial-tickethouders kunnen deze show bijwonen met een extra ticket dat €8 kost.

Heb je helemaal geen zin in Les Savy Fav, dan sla je ‘m gewoon over en we beloven je plechtig dat je net zo’n mooi festival als altijd zult hebben. 

HO WACHT, IK WIL LES SAVY FAV WEL ZIEN!
Wil je niks liever dan Les Savy Fav zien tijdens Left of the Dial, dan is dit belangrijk om te weten: 

• Alleen mensen die in het bezit zijn van een Left of the Dial-ticket ontvangen maandag 2 juni een e-mail met instructies om een ticket te bestellen; 
• In oktober moet je een geldig Left of the Dial-polsbandje hebben én een extra ticket om bij het concert binnen te komen. 

Het blijft een natuurlijk een experiment, dus sorry voor al het gedoe, maar we vonden het ’t proberen waard. Bedankt voor jullie geduld!

LONG VERSION:
LEFT OF THE DIAL – THE 2018 CONCEPT
When we first started Left of the Dial, we thought it would be cool not only to showcase the best new artists, but also to invite some more established bands – bands we’ve loved for a long time. We figured it would give the younger ticketholders a chance to see where some of the Left of the Dial bands got their inspiration, and for the bands it would be cool to share a lineup with their role models. Although we really tried every year, for a number of reasons, we never managed to bring that concept into practice.

Until now.

LES SAVY FAV
A few days ago, we were informed that Les Savy Fav are looking for a show in Rotterdam on October the 25^th, which is of course, the Left of the Dial Saturday.

We’ve been huge fans of Les Savy Fav for years, and the gig they played at our own venue Rotown back in 2007 is one of the most memorable shows we ever hosted. Their live performances are pretty spectacular and we feel that loads of current artists are in some way indebted to this New York-based art rock band.

Cleary, we’d love to welcome them at Left of the Dial.

BUT THAT BRINGS US TO A WHOLE NEW SET OF COMPLICATIONS…
Firstly, we feel very strongly about our no-headliners policy. All artists have always been equally important to us, and we wouldn’t change that for anyone.

Secondly, we’ve no idea what would happen if we mix these veterans in with the rest of the lineup. Maybe you all prefer discovering new bands and wouldn’t go to their show. Or even worse, maybe everyone wants to go, and we end up with long queues and angry people when the venue reaches capacity. We obviously wouldn’t want that.

ADDITIONAL TICKET
Here’s what we came up with:

• Les Savy Fav will play a late night show on Saturday night at one of the Left of the Dial venues
• Left of the Dial ticketholders can attend the show with an additional ticket that will cost €8

If you don’t want to attend the show, we promise you’ll still have just as amazing a Left of the Dial experience as usual.

BUT WAIT, I WANT TO SEE LES SAVY FAV!
If seeing Les Savy Fav at Left of the Dial sounds like the best thing ever, here’s what you should know:

• Only Left of the Dial ticketholders will receive an email on Monday June 2 with instructions on how to order their ticket;
• In October you’ll need to show your valid Left of the Dial wristband AND the additional ticket to get access to the concert.

It's just an experiment, so we do apologize if we’re only making things more complicated for you, but we felt it was worth a try. And whatever the outcome, we thank you for bearing with us!

Bands on a Bus is eigenlijk meer een toeristisch tochtje door Rotterdam terwijl er een bescheiden versie van een band aan boord speelt. Nog steeds hartstikke leuk natuurlijk, want er zijn discolampen en een bar en ook nog eens fantastisch uitzicht. 

Maar eerlijk is eerlijk, het voor ons ook gewoon een experiment. Misschien gaan we erachter komen dat er een heel goede reden is dat de busmaatschappij nog nooit eerder spelende bands aan boord heeft gehad. Misschien wordt het geluid vreselijk en misschien staat de bus bij de eerste rit al oneindig lang in de file. We hebben echt geen idee… 

Als het een groot succes blijkt te zijn, gaan we volgend jaar natuurlijk wél gewoon kaartjes verkopen, maar gezien het experimentele aard van dit project, leek het ons verstandig eerst eens met gratis tickets te beginnen… 

Goed, als je best een proefkonijn wilt zijn en je gaat achteraf niet klagen dat het de meest mislukte busrit ooit was, dan verwelkomen we je met alle liefde in de Left of the Dial-bus!

ALSJE-ALSJE-ALSJEBLIEFT 
Bestel alsjeblieft alleen een gratis ticket als je het ook daadwerkelijk van plan bent te gebruiken. En als je in het bezit bent van een ticket, maar je kunt er toch niet bij zijn, laat het ons weten, of geef je ticket door aan iemand anders. We hebben maar 70 tickets per bus-tour beschikbaar en het zou toch eeuwig zonde zijn als er plekken leeg blijven! 

HET LOGISTIEKE GEDEELTE 
Je kunt kiezen uit 6 bus-tours, dus let goed op bij het bestellen van je ticket:

Je mag zoveel ticket bestellen als je wilt, maar je mag alleen met de bus mee op vertoon van je busticket én een Left of the Dial 2025-polsbandje.

• De bus-tour start ter hoogte van Rochussenstraat 13, dat is 2 minuten lopen van de ticketbalie;
• Elke bus-tour duurt ongeveer 45 minuten, afhankelijk van het verkeer;
• Waarschijnlijk gaan we de line-up per bus pas op het allerlaatste moment bekend kunnen maken;

Bands on a Bus will be a sightseeing tour of Rotterdam while a very modest version of a band plays on board. Still, it’ll be a lot of fun. There’ll be disco lights, a bar, and great views.

In all honesty, it’s also an experiment. Maybe there’s a good reason why the bus company has never had bands on their vehicles before. Maybe the sound will be horrible, and maybe the bus will get stuck in traffic on the very first trip. We really don’t know.

If it turns out to be a huge success, we’ll definitely be selling bus tickets next year. But considering the experimental nature of this whole endeavour, you can order your Bands on a Bus tickets for free this time.

So, if you’re the experimental type, and you don’t mind running the risk of wasting an hour on your life on a bus tour from hell, we’d love to welcome you on board of our Left of the Dial bus!

• The bus tours start at Rochussenstraat 13, which is a 2 minute walk from the ticket desk;

• You may order as many tickets as you want, but please note that you’ll need to show both your bus ticket and your Left of the Dial wristband!

We’re adding 3 new venues that are kind of legendary in Rotterdam – but also a bit further out. So, be prepared for longer walks, bike rides, or (semi-)public transport. We’ll be posting explanatory videos soon, so no real need to spend 6 hours of your life reading this entire post. 

The way-too-long version:
If you were a concertgoer in Rotterdam in the early 2000s, chances are you regularly went to Waterfront.

It was a bunker-like venue under the big red bridge, just east of the city centre. Dark and gritty. But if you needed some fresh air, you could simply step outside, and from the quay you’d have one of the best views of Rotterdam by night. We saw so many great concerts there – it was just a really cool place for anyone into so-called alternative music.

But things don’t last forever, not in Rotterdam anyway, and in 2008 Waterfront closed it doors. 

In 2010, another organisation took over, and they really messed things up. They essentially scammed the local government (the owners of the building) and vanished abroad. After that, the concert hall remained empty.

For years, we’ve been trying to get Waterfront back in use – without success. Club Haug – a very cool comedy club – opened next door which sparked some hope, but apparently, there’s a leak in the roof of the actual concert hall that is – for technical reasons we don’t really understand – practically unfixable. Logically, the local government can’t allow new tenants into a leaking building, and so that’s where the story seemed to end.

Or so we thought.

A while ago, we decided to give it another try. We asked if we could use Waterfront only as a temporarily festival venue. There is a shortage of suitable concert halls in Rotterdam, especially during the Left of the Dial weekend and we could really use the extra room. We figured that if we had two weeks to tidy up the place, and brought in a few buckets just in case it rained, we could revive some of Waterfront’s historical glory – even if just for three days.

And much to our surprise our plan got green lighted!

We were over the moon when we got the news – but, as usual, it came with a whole new set of problems. Lots of logistical issues that we won’t bore you with, but our biggest concern was the venue being quite a walk from our other locations.

On the other hand, Waterfront is located at the pickup-point of Bands on a Boat, so our regular ticketholders know where to find it. We reckoned, if we’d add two more venues close by and set up a bus service to the area, it might still work. 

And that’s basically what we’ve been doing the past few weeks; creating a sort of new festival hub to show you more of our beautiful city and to accommodate more bands. 

It took us long enough, but we found two just as legendary venues in the same area: The Cube (formerly known as Plan C – if you’ve studied in Rotterdam, you’ve gotten drunk there at least once) and the iconic Rotterdam Public Library (where we borrowed hundreds of books over the years). All near the cube houses and the market hall and, more in general, it’s just another amazing part of the city.

To cut a way too long story a little bit shorter: we’re really proud that Waterfront, The Cube/Plan C and Rotterdam Public Library will be part of Left of the Dial 2025, but we also feel it’s only fair to warn you:

The three venues are about a 20-minute walk from the ticket desk, and it’ll take another 25 minutes to get from Waterfront to the Perron/Roodkapje/Salsability/160K area. The bus service will be free for all ticketholders, but given Rotterdam’s traffic, sticking to a fixed schedule will be tricky. If not impossible.

We’ll do our best to make everything run as smooth as possible, but wearing comfortable shoes or bringing your own bike (or getting a rental) is strongly recommended.

Either way, it felt like too cool an opportunity to pass up – and with a bit of love and understanding from your side, we’ll make it work!

 Nog 684 passe-partouts te koop 
De vraag die ons het meest wordt gesteld, is of er nog kaartjes beschikbaar zullen zijn in mei of juni, of wanneer die persoon ook verwacht een ticket te kunnen kopen. Het eerlijke antwoord is dat we geen idee hebben. 
We hebben het al vaker gezegd: jullie zijn redelijk onvoorspelbaar. De ene week vliegen de kaartjes de deur uit, de andere week verkopen we amper iets. Daardoor vroegen wij ons af wat er zou gebeuren als we gewoon elke week exact zouden melden hoeveel passe-partouts er nog zijn.
Festivals delen dat soort informatie eigenlijk nooit en de enige echt goeie reden die we daarvoor kunnen bedenken, is dat het promotioneel misschien niet handig is. Niemand weet precies van welk getal late kopers nerveus worden. Misschien is dat bij 200, maar het kan net zo goed zijn dat iedereen dan ‘oh, nog tijd zat’ denkt. 
Met het aantal tickets dat nu is verkocht, zou Left of the Dial statistisch gezien in de zomer uitverkocht moeten zijn. De vraag is: zouden we de komende weken meer of meer tickets verkopen vergeleken met vorig jaar als we precies laten weten wat de stand is? Er is natuurlijk maar één manier om daarachter te komen, dus daarom delen we vanaf elke woensdag op BlueSky de ‘midweeks’. Tenminste, we gaan het een maandlang proberen om te kijken wat het effect is. Vorige week hebben we dat voor het eerst gedaan en toen zijn er 114 tickets verkocht waardoor er nu nog exact 684 passe-partouts te koop zijn. 
Misschien is dit het domste idee ooit hoor en misschien hebben al die andere festivals groot gelijk dat ze over dit soort dingen hun mond houden. Als dat zo blijkt te zijn, stoppen we er gewoon weer mee, maar proberen kan nooit kwaad, dachten we. Alles om maar niet te hoeven adverteren via Meta!

People often ask us if Left of the Dial tickets will still be available in May, or June, or whatever date they’re expecting to be able to buy their tickets. The honest answer is: we don’t know.
We said it before, you are an unpredictable bunch. Some weeks we’re selling dozens of tickets daily, other weeks hardly any tickets are purchased. So, we wondered what would happen if we start giving you weekly updates on the exact number of tickets that is still available.
Festivals usually don’t share that kind of information, and one of the most valid reasons we could think of why a festival wouldn’t be open about their ticket sales is a pure promotional one: no one knows which number of remaining tickets will persuade people to buy their tickets immediately. ‘Only 200 tickets left’ might make some late buyers nervous, but it could just as easily sound like a plenty-of-time-to-buy-tickets-situation to others.
With the number of tickets sold right now, statistically Left of the Dial should be sold out somewhere in the summer. But what will happen if we start giving public updates? Will we sell more, or less tickets compared to previous years?  There’s only one way to find out and that’s why we’ve started to share our ‘midweeks’ on BlueSky. Every Wednesday we’ll post the exact number of tickets that is still available. For at least a month. Last week, we’ve sold 114 tickets which means that right now, we have room for 684 more ticketholders.
Maybe, it turns out that this is the worst idea ever, and that other festivals are very sensible not to share that kind of information. Clearly, we’ll stop posting the updates if that’s the case, but right now, we’re feeling it’s worth a try. Anything we can do to stay away from Meta ads!

Een nieuwe generatie muziekprofessionals
Een tijdje terug besloten we dat Left of the Dial niet alleen artiesten een opstap naar een glanzende carrière wil bieden, maar dat het ook een plek moet zijn waar mensen die achter de schermen willen werken op weg worden geholpen. Als we kunnen bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe generatie eerlijke en hardwerkende muziekprofessionals, komt dat natuurlijk ook alle toekomstige artiesten ten goede.

Daarom is de Left of the Dial muziekconferentie dit jaar specifiek bedoeld voor mensen die proberen hun weg te vinden in de muziekindustrie. Er zitten 50 doorgewinterde internationale muziekprofessionals voor hen klaar om al hun brandende vragen te beantwoorden en dit noemen we de Ask Me Anything Sessions. Wat moet je kunnen, waar bestaan de dagelijkse werkzaamheden uit en natuurlijk het belangrijkste: hoe kom je aan een baan in de muziekindustrie?  

De eerste helft van de muziekprofessionals die naar Rotterdam komen, is inmiddels bekend gemaakt! 

Algemene informatie
De muziekconferentie vindt in de middag van donderdag 23 oktober plaats in de Doelen, Rotterdam voor de officiële start van het festival om 19.00 uur. Er zijn losse tickets beschikbaar die alleen toegang geven tot de conferentie voor €35 en een conferentieticket inclusief een festivalpasse-partout kost €90.

A new generation of music professionals
Other than just a cool festival, Left of the Dial has always aimed to be a steppingstone for emerging artists. But a while back, we started thinking that we should also offer a helping hand to people who want to work behind the scenes. If we can somehow contribute to the development a new generation of honest and hardworking music professionals, it would benefit all future artists.

Ask Me Anything Sessions
Therefor this year, the Left of the Dial music conference will consist of a series of conversations between one music professional and two or three conference attendees: the Ask Me Anything Sessions. In these sessions, the aspiring pros get to ask the 50 seasoned experts anything they want to know about their job—whether it requires a specific set of skills, what their day-to-day responsibilities are, and probably most importantly, how they managed to get that job.

The first half of the lineup of the international music professionals who are coming to Rotterdam has been released!

General information
The Left of the Dial music conference will take place on Thursday the 23^rd of October in the centre of Rotterdam. A conference-only ticket is available for €35 and a conference ticket including a 3-day festival pass is €90.

Sinds kort is er in Rotterdam een prachtig nieuw initiatief dat Ticketbank heet. Het is een online platform dat gratis tickets voor concerten en evenementen beschikbaar stelt voor mensen die gebruik maken van onze lokale Voedselbank. Het is een hartverwarmende manier om te voorkomen dat deze mensen in een sociaal isolement raken en Left of the Dial steunt dit project dan ook met alle liefde. 

Laten we voorop stellen dat we heel goed snappen dat sommigen van jullie het ook niet breed hebben en dat daardoor een Left of the Dial-ticket sowieso al een behoorlijke uitgave is. Deze boodschap is dus duidelijk niet aan jullie gericht. Maar mocht je wel wat meer te besteden hebben, dan kun je ons helpen Ticketbank te steunen:

Ga naar onze ticketshop en koop een of meerdere donatietickets voor €5 per stuk. 
Telkens als er 10 donatietickets zijn verkocht, leggen wij €25 bij en doneren we een ticket voor het festival aan Ticketbank.

SHARING IS CARING
Heb je al een Left of the Dial-ticket, maar kun je er niet het hele festival bijzijn, dan kun je ook nog op de ouderwetse manier je steentje bijdragen:

Al jaren bieden we Sharing is Caring aan, een service waarmee je heel gemakkelijk je polsbandje aan iemand kunt doorgeven voor een volgende festivaldag. Oorspronkelijk was dit vooral bedoeld om te zorgen dat mensen niet heel ingewikkeld hoefden te doen met bandjes van polsen afwurmen om die door te geven. Natuurlijk mag je de service nog steeds gebruiken om je polsbandje aan een bekende door te geven, maar mocht niemand je polsbandje willen hebben, dan doneren wij je polsbandje ook aan Ticketbank.

In Rotterdam there’s an amazing new project named Ticketbank. It’s an online platform which offers free tickets for concerts or events to people using the services of our local food bank. It’s a wonderful way to prevent those people from getting socially isolated, and Left of the Dial wholeheartedly supports this project.

We fully understand that some of you are also struggling to make ends meet and that a Left of the Dial ticket is already quite an expense. If so, this message is clearly not for you. But, if you have a little more to spend, there’s a way you can help us support Ticketbank:

For years, we’ve been offering Sharing is Caring, a service to pass on your wristband to someone else of you can’t stay for all 3 festival days. Initially, this service was meant for friends unable to attend on the same day; we just wanted to avoid the whole wriggling-off-wristbands-thingy and make it easy to share a ticket. But some people don’t have a friend to share their wristband with, so we’ll donate those wristbands to Ticketbank.

Let op: de aanmeldingen voor DIY DJ zijn vol!

Klachten over de muziek op de Left of the Dial-afterparty’s? Dan draai je toch gewoon zelf, want dit jaar mag iedereen de dj zijn!

We hebben de details nog niet  helemaal uitgewerkt, maar het globale idee is als volgt:

In een van de Left of the Dial-nachtclubs (niet in Rotown, maar wel in de buurt) zal er een DIY DJ Party zijn waar bezoekers zelf hun favoriete dansplaatjes kunnen draaien. Iedereen die zich van te voren aanmeldt, krijgt een specifiek moment toebedeeld om achter de draaitafels te kruipen. 

We hebben natuurlijk nog geen idee hoeveel mensen dit daadwerkelijk willen doen, dus we kunnen je nog niet zeggen hoe lang je zou moeten draaien, of op welke avond. Dat is helemaal afhankelijk van jullie reacties. Veel ervaring heb je in elk geval niet nodig, er zal een doorgewinterde dj aanwezig zijn om je te helpen, mocht dat nodig zijn. Er zijn maar twee dingen waar je wél aan moet voldoen:

1. Je moet een Left of the Dial-ticket hebben. Het is niet de bedoeling dat semiprofessionele dj’s gaan draaien die totaal geen binding met onze Left of the Dial-familie hebben. Dit moet echt jullie feestje zijn;
2. Het is de bedoeling dat het een feestje wordt, dus je moet dansbare muziek draaien. Dit is duidelijk niet de tijd of de plaats om te laten zien hoeveel minimalistische ambient platen je kent…

Is dit precies wat je altijd al hebt willen doen? Mail ons dan nu meteen en zet in het onderwerp van je bericht “DIY DJ”. Vermeld je Left of the Dial-ticketnummer, zodat we weten dat je echt bij ons hoort en vertel verder wat voor soort muziek je zou willen draaien, op welke avond je dat het liefste zou doen en hoe lang jij denkt dat jouw set zou moeten duren.

No need to complain about the music at the Left of the Dial after parties, just do it yourself: this year everybody gets a chance to DJ!

It’s still a work in progress, so bear with us, but this is the general idea:

In one of the late night venues we’ll have a DIY DJ Party where Left of the Dial ticketholders can play their favourite danceable tunes. Everybody who signs up gets a specific time slot to spin the wheels of steel, or whatever the expression is.

We have no idea how many people actually would want to DJ, so we can’t tell you yet how long those slots are going to be, nor do we know on which night or nights it’s going to be. That all really depends on you.

You don’t need much experience, there’ll be a skilled DJ present to help you out if needed. The only two requirements are:

1. 1. You need to have a Left of the Dial ticket – we don’t want any wannabe professional DJs who are just looking for an extra gig, but who have absolutely no love for our community;

1. 1. It’s supposed to be a party, so you need to play danceable music. This is not the time, nor the place to demonstrate your undying love for minimalistic ambient records…

Please include your Left of the Dial 2025 ticket number, so we know that you’re part of the family, and let us know what kind of music you’d want to play, which night you’d prefer, and how long you think your set should be.

If enough of you sign up, we’ll have the most amazing DIY DJ Party in October, but if it turns out that you collectively think this is the lamest idea ever, and you all rather just dance to other people’s music, than we won’t and we’ll just stick to the regular after parties!
