Het festival begint officieel met de ietwat bizarre Grand Opening op donderdag in Arminius. Om 18.30 uur gaan de deuren open en om 18.45 uur is de officiële openingsceremonie. Je kunt er alleen bij zijn als je je polsbandje al hebt, dus zorg dat je die ruim op tijd hebt opgehaald. Voor de Grand Opening geldt wel vol = vol, dus als je met ons wil proosten met een gratis mini-cocktail, moet je zorgen dat je vooraan in de rij staat!

We hebben eerder iets geschreven over het idee achter The Grand Opening, wel in het Engels en we hadden even geen tijd om het te vertalen, maar als je dat geen probleem vindt, lees vooral verder!

Then we realised that was the worst idea ever. You don’t want an amazing band having to follow up an amazing intro track. You need contrast.

The next day, our DJs played the Birdie Song on repeat right before the band started. Folks were clearly getting more and more irritated, and when the band finally began playing the crowd was so relieved that they started cheering as if the Beatles had been reincarnated.

Contrast works.

A couple of weeks ago, we started planning for the Grand Opening of Left of the Dial.

We’ve been to official openings before, and usually the director of the festival gives a lengthy speech to explain how proud they are and then some poor musician plays a few songs to an inattentive crowd of networking executives.

Granted, that would be a huge contrast to the rest of the festival, but not the kind we want.

We won’t reveal exactly what’s going to happen at the Grand Opening, but what we can say:

• You’re all welcome (you need a wristband though)
• We have a limited capacity (so don’t be late)
• It’s going to be the shortest opening ceremony ever (blink and you’ll miss it)
• There will be contrast

If you’ll join us for the Grand Opening you’ll also have the best seat in the house to see the first band in Arminius. Keep an eye on your inbox, Left of the Dial ticketholders will receive all needed info before the festival.

On Thursday the festival officially starts with the slightly bizarre Grand Opening at Arminius. Doors open at 18.30h and the official opening ceremony starts at 18.45h. More about the reasoning behind The Grand Opening:

KINO en Left of the Dial presenteren drie films met totaal eigengereide muzikanten in de hoofdrollen: de pas-uitgekomen docu Blur: To The End, een preview van de Sundance-publiekswinnaar Kneecap (een fictiefilm met het grofgebekte hiphoptrio zelf in de hoofdrol) en de ‘stranger than fiction’ SXSW-docu Swamp Dogg gets his Pool Painted, waarin cultmuzikant Swamp Dogg die al sinds 1954 actief is (en nog steeds!) een eerbetoon krijgt – volledig in zijn eigen stijl.

De toegang tot alle screening is gratis op vertoon van je Left of the Dial-polsbandje.

blur: To The End – zaterdag 19 oktober – 10.15-12.00 uur
Wat heerlijk was het vorig jaar om Damon Albarn weer op het podium te zien met zijn oude Blur-bandmaten. De creatiefste frontman dit centennium bleef altijd bezig met o.a. Gorillaz en Rocket Juice and the Moon maar na de tweede Blur-breakup in 2016 bleef het stil rond zijn Britpopsensatie die ooit de aartsrivaal was van Oasis. Maar opeens was Blur even terug in volle glorie; recente hit The Narcissist was een van de beste songs van 2023. Het was van korte duur; de band heeft de handdoek alweer in de ring gegooid. Gelukkig heeft het ons de indrukwekkende rockdocumentaire blur: To The End opgeleverd.

Swamp Dogg gets his Pool Painted – zaterdag 19 oktober – 12.20-14.00 uur
They don’t come much more alternative than Swamp Dogg, the wildly eccentric and genre-bending musician who has been blending soul, funk, and satire since the ’50s, creating music that’s as strange as it is soulful. Known for his outlandish album covers (like riding a giant rat or floating in space), he became a cult favorite that allegedly gave Snoop Dogg his name and most recently made an album with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). This fantastic doc pays homage to the crazy maverick and his friends Moogstar and Guitar Shorty.

Kneecap – zaterdag 19 oktober – 14.15-16.00 uur
Zo onstuimig maar oprecht als het Noord-Ierse raptrio Kneecap is hun biopic; een Trainspotting-esque film vol drugs, seks en geweld – winnaar van de publieksprijs op Sundance. Dat de meeste scènes waargebeurd zijn in het onrustige Belfast geloof je direct, want deze hilarische film overtuigt vanaf de eerste seconde. Allicht omdat de activistische rappers zichzelf spelen en een enorme podiumpresence hebben – op Down The Rabbithole dit jaar gaven ze 3voor12’s favoriete show. Hun speelfilmdebuut is wat ons betreft één van de verfrissendste films in jaren, en heeft het in zich een instant classic te worden.

De filmvertoningen op 19 oktober zijn niet-geplaceerd en gratis toegankelijk op vertoon van polsbandjes (vol=vol). Er is ook een gelimiteerd aantal tickets te koop voor bezoekers die enkel het dagprogramma bezoeken, gebruik code LEFTKINO voor 25% korting op je ticket. Voor de Rotterdammers; deze films worden in de weken voorafgaand aan het festival ook al een aantal keer als preview vertoond, ook daarvoor is de kortingscode LEFTKINO geldig. KINO and Left of the Dial present three films featuring distinct musicians in the lead roles: the newly released documentary Blur: To The End, a preview of the Sundance audience award-winner Kneecap (a fictional film starring the foul-mouthed hip-hop trio themselves), and the 'stranger than fiction' SXSW documentary Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted, in which cult musician Swamp Dogg, active since 1954 (and still going strong!), is honoured – entirely in his own style.

Blur: To The End - Saturday 19th October - 10:15-12:00
How wonderful it was last year to see Damon Albarn back on stage with his old Blur bandmates. The most creative frontman of this century has always kept busy with projects like Gorillaz and Rocket Juice and the Moon, but after Blur’s second breakup in 2016, it went quiet around his Britpop sensation, which was once the archrival of Oasis. But suddenly Blur were back in full glory; their recent hit The Narcissist was one of the best songs of 2023. It was short-lived; the band have thrown in the towel again. Luckily, this gave us the impressive rock documentary blur: To The End.

Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted - Saturday 19th October - 12:20-14:00

Kneecap - Saturday 19th October - 14:15-16:00
As wild but sincere as the Northern Irish rap trio Kneecap is, so is their biopic; a Trainspotting-esque film full of drugs, sex, and violence – winner of the audience award at Sundance. The fact that most of the scenes are based on real events in turbulent Belfast is easy to believe, as this hilarious film grabs your attention from the very first second. That’s probably because the activist rappers play themselves and have an enormous stage presence – at Down The Rabbit Hole this year, they gave 3voor12’s favourite show. Their feature film debut is, in our view, one of the most refreshing films in years, and has the potential to become an instant classic.

The entrance to all screenings is free for anyone with a Left of the Dail wristband on a first come, first served base. Alternatively if you're only attending the day programme of Left of the Dial (meaning you don't have a wristband), limited tickets are available for these screenings as well. Wij van Left of the Dial laten mensen niet graag met lege handen naar huis gaan. Daarom zijn er dit jaar ook weer allerlei souvenirs te verzamelen.

Schippershoedje
We hebben er niet genoeg voor iedereen, maar als je met Bands on a Boat meevaart en je vraagt er heel vriendelijk om, dan krijg jij wellicht een origineel Left of the Dial-schippershoedje.

Een boottrip van een uur door de Rotterdamse havens met alleen maar leuke mensen, een open bar én twee Left of the Dial-bands, dat is Bands on a Boat. De speciale boot maakt vier tripjes, twee op vrijdag en twee op zaterdag, beide dagen vertrekt de boot om 13.00 uur en 15.00 uur. Kaarten kosten €19,50 (inclusief bier/fris/wijn!) Wees ruim op tijd aanwezig, want de boot wacht op niemand!

Dat is op loopafstand van (metro)station Blaak, ongeveer ter hoogte het oude Waterfront. Dit is ook het eindpunt van de boottocht.

ID
Om het barpersoneel zo snel mogelijk te kunnen laten werken, moet je een stempel hebben om alcohol te kunnen bestellen. Deze delen we bij het instappen uit, maar uiteraard alleen aan mensen die met een geldig ID kunnen aantonen dat ze 18+ zijn. Zorg dus dat je je ID klaar hebt!

GARDEROBE
Er is een garderobe waar je je jas op kan hangen, deze is niet bewaakt.

ROKEN
Je mag alleen buiten op het dek roken. Er zijn geen sigaretten verkrijgbaar op de boot.

BESCHERM JE OREN
Bij hoge geluidsdrukken is het slim om oordoppen te gebruiken. Zo hoor je goed de muziek, kun je nog steeds communiceren met je medebezoekers én bescherm je ook nog je gehoor. Er zijn geen oordoppen op de boot aanwezig, dus zorg dat je ze meeneemt!

A one-hour boat trip through the Rotterdam harbors for friendly people only, an open bar and two Left of the Dial bands, that is Bands on a Boat. The special boat makes four trips, two on Friday and two on Saturday, both days the boat departs at 1 pm and 3 pm. Be sure to be on time, the boat waits for no one!

ID
In order for the bar staff to work as quickly as possible, you must have a stamp to order alcohol. We hand these out when boarding, but of course only to people who can prove that they are 18+ with a valid ID. So make sure you have your ID ready!

WARDROBE
There is a cloakroom where you can hang your coat, it is not guarded.

SMOKING
You are only allowed to smoke outside on the deck. There are no cigarettes available on the boat.

PROTECT YOUR EARS
At high sound pressures it is smart to use earplugs. This way you can hear the music well, you can still communicate with your fellow visitors and you also protect your hearing. There are no earplugs on the boat, so make sure you bring them!

Zelfs als je niet van plan bent om in Rotterdam te blijven wonen, is dit de ideale manier om je tijdelijk een echte local te voelen!

To help you get adjusted quickly to our city, we offer you our civic integration crash course. In about 30 minutes you’ll learn everything you need to know about our beautiful city. Including a brief history lesson to explain why gabber-music was born here, how to make our signature dish ‘the kapsalon’, and most importantly: how to use the word ‘joh’. Take the course, even if you’re only staying for the weekend, it will make you feel like a temporary local!

Wat: Een moshpit kan er redelijk intimiderend uitzien, maar met deze versnelde cursus in rock-etiquette ben je in no-time een pit-professional! 

Wat is een moshpit?
Een moshpit is de zone waarin rock- en punkfans wild, energiek en schijnbaar compleet losgeslagen tegen elkaar opbotsen. De pit wordt gevoed door opzwepende muziek en de stoot adrenaline die loskomt, maakt het t de ultieme chaotische viering van geluid, zweet en pure, ongefilterde rockenergie.

Wat valt er te leren?
Het is natuurlijk nooit leuk om aan de verkeerde kant van een elleboog terecht te komen (hoe cool littekens ook kunnen zijn). Kom dus zaterdag op de meest veilige manier kennismaken met de ware mosh-cultuur in Arminus. Leer de ins en outs in theorie én door de pit te ervaren. Hoe begin je een pit, wat moet je doen als iemand valt en waarom een bril dragen tijdens het moshen misschien niet het beste idee is.

What is a mosh pit ?
A mosh pit is a wild, energetic dance zone where rock and punk fans crash into each other in a way that seems careless. The pit is fuelled by electrifying music and adrenaline making it the ultimate chaotic celebration of sound, sweat, and pure, unfiltered rock energy.

What do I need to learn ?
That being said, it is never nice to be on the wrong side of an elbow (even if face scars are cool). So come crash safely into the mosh-culture on Saturday at Arminus and learn the ins and outs by experiencing the pit: how to properly start a pit, what to do if someone falls down, and why wearing glasses might not be the best idea.
