FIRST-TIMER’S GUIDE

Kort samengevat: Left of the Dial is een 3-daags festival dat zich afspeelt op verschillende locaties in het centrum Rotterdam en probeert je kennis te laten maken met zoveel mogelijk nieuwe muziek. Dat betekent dat je voornamelijk van zaal naar zaal zult rennen om allerlei artiesten te zien waar je nu waarschijnlijk nog nooit van hebt gehoord, maar waar je na het weekend hopelijk fan van bent.

De twee dingen die wij het allerbelangrijkste vinden zijn muziek en het welzijn van alle levende wezens. Het is dus heel simpel: wees, aardig voor je medefestivalganger en steun de artiesten zoveel je kunt. Als iedereen zich aan deze basisregels houdt, wordt het een geweldig festival!

Je ticket is geldig voor alle drie de festivaldagen. Bij de ticketbalie wissel je het om voor een polsbandje en daarmee heb je toegang tot alle festivallocaties, tenzij er specifiek wordt vermeld dat je een extra ticket nodig hebt, zoals bij Bands on a Boat of Dine Like a Star.

Wanneer je een groepsticket koopt, krijg je 6 tickets, maar je betaalt er maar voor 5. Het zijn echt 6 losse tickets, dus je hoeft niet tegelijk bij de ticketbalie te komen om je polsbandje te krijgen.

Als Left of the Dial uitverkocht is en je wilt toch nog proberen een kaartje te bemachtigen, probeer het dan via Ticketswap, dat is het enige tweehandstickets-platform waar je gegarandeerd bent van officiële kaarten.

Controleer alsjeblieft ruim voor je bij de ticketbalie aankomt of je exact weet waar je tickets zijn. Beter nog: controleer het nu! Kun je ze niet vinden? Geen probleem, als je ons mailt, helpen we je. We hebben alleen het mailadres nodig waarmee je de tickets hebt gekocht en dan sturen we ze je nog een keer toe!

Natuurlijk mag je aantrekken wat je maar wilt, we zijn het Met Gala tenslotte niet en het maakt niemand wat uit hoe je er uitziet. Er zijn echter wel een paar dingen om rekening mee te houden als je je outfit uitkiest: Het weer is onvoorspelbaar in oktober. We hebben zonovergoten festivaldagen gehad en non-stop regen. Ons advies is dus: laagjes! En een waterdichte jas kan ook geen kwaad. Het belangrijkste is om in elk geval comfortabele schoenen aan te trekken, want de kans is groot dat je heel veel gaat lopen.

Wij vinden elke band en artiest even goed, dus naar onze bescheiden mening kun je gewoon een willekeurige zaal binnen lopen en je gaat iets goeds zien. Als je je liever wat beter voorbereidt, of je wilt straks luidkeels kunnen meezingen, beluister dan onze playlists op Spotify, of op Bandcamp.

Buiten de muziek om hebben we zoveel extra extra’s dat we ze op een aparte pagina hebben verzameld. Zeker de moeite waard om even te bekijken, helemaal als je van gratis souvenirs houdt!

In de week voor het festival ontvang je dagelijks een nieuwsbrief en we raden je van harte aan die allemaal goed te lezen. Alle belangrijke informatie staat hierin, zoals last-minute aanpassingen in het blokkenschema, of wat je moet doen in geval van nood.

We zijn gestopt met het drukken van boekjes met het blokkenschema, want we hielden er op de een of andere manier altijd veel te veel over en dat is zonde van het papier. Dus print of zelf het blokkenschema, of download onze app. We geven meteen toe dat het niet de meest geavanceerde app van de wereld is, maar er zitten genoeg functies in om je festivalplanning makkelijker te maken.

Kom met het openbaar vervoer, of op de fiets. Of met een taxi/Uber, dat kan natuurlijk ook. Dat is sowieso het meest milieuvriendelijke om te doen, maar Rotterdam is ook nog eens lastig begaanbaar met de auto en bovendien zijn parkeerplekken schaars en duur. De ticketbalie waar je je polsbandje moet ophalen, zit ongeveer tien minuten lopen vanaf Centraal Station, of je neemt tram 4.

Ben je geen Rotterdammer en raak je helemaal verdwaald? Vraag dan naar Kabouter Buttplug (echt waar!) onze ticketbalie zit namelijk naast dit wereldberoemde standbeeld.  

Bij de ticketbalie laat je je e-ticket scannen en dan krijg je van ons een polsbandje. Het scannen kan gewoon vanaf je telefoon uiteraard. Met het polsbandje heb je drie dagen lang toegang tot alle festivallocaties met uitzondering van sommige onderdelen zoals bijvoorbeeld Bands on a Boat, daar heb je extra ticket voor nodig.

Op donderdag tussen 18.00 en 19.00 uur is het over het algemeen het drukte bij de ticketbalie en is de kans groot dat je wat langer in de rij moet staan. Speelt een band die je absoluut wil zien als eerste, zorg dan dat je vroeg bij de ticketbalie bent.

Als je je polsbandje om hebt gedaan, kun je op pad. De loopafstand vanaf de ticketbalie naar de verschillende zalen varieert van 3 minuten tot ongeveer 20 minuten. Elke zaal heeft maar beperkt plek, dus als je verzekerd wil zijn van toegang tot een bepaald concert, wees dan ruim op tijd bij de zaal, of probeer een priority-pas te bemachtigen.

De meeste bands spelen meerdere keren (kijk in het blokkenschema en je ziet een # bij de acts die aangeeft hoeveel shows ze doen), dus je hebt vaker kans om ze te zien. Sommige zalen zijn vrij klein en dus eerder vol. Daarom is het slim op ons zalenoverzicht te bekijken. Daarop zie je niet alleen hoe groot een zaal is, maar ook de rolstoeltoegankelijkheid en de prijs van een biertje, handig!

Drink en eet goed en neem even rust als je moe begint te worden. Als je hulp nodig hebt met wat dan ook, laat het iemand weten. Ons barpersoneel, de vrijwilligers en de beveiligers, iedereen staat voor je klaar. En onthoud: het allerbelangrijkste is dat je het naar je zin hebt!

De bezoekers van Left of the Dial staan erom bekend een bijzonder vriendelijke community te zijn en dat willen we graag zo houden. Zodra de deuren opengaan, is het festival helemaal van jullie en moeten jullie er het beste festival ooit van maken. Dat kan vooral door een beetje aardig te zijn voor elkaar. Begrijp dat sommige mensen heel erg spontaan en praatgraag zijn en andere juist helemaal niet. Dat is allebei prima, als je maar respect voor elkaar hebt. Als je per ongeluk tegen iemand op botst, bied je excuses aan, dan is er niks aan de hand. Oh en als je van plan bent om te gaan moshen, leer dan de etiquette van de pit! (Wat vooral neerkomt op het meteen omhoog helpen van mensen die zijn gevallen…)

Op het podium staan is echt niet altijd even makkelijk en alle Left of the Dial-artiesten werken keihard om het jou naar je zin te maken. Dus support ze hoe je maar kunt. Applaudisseer zo hard mogelijk, dans, zing mee, volg ze op social media, of koop hun merchandise. En alsjeblieft, wat je ook doet, ga niet luidkeels je weekend plannen bespreken tijdens een rustig concert. Vrijwel al onze artiesten lopen gewoon in het wild rond en vinden het alleen maar leuk om een praatje te maken, dus stap gerust na een show op ze af om ze te vertellen dat je genoten hebt, dat wordt enorm gewaardeerd.

Het is vaak moeilijk te voorspellen waar het druk zal zijn en waar niet. Maar er treden zoveel geweldige artiesten op; als je ergens een lange rij ziet, ga dan gewoon door naar een volgende zaal. Grote kans dat je blij wordt verrast! (Oké, of minder blij, niet alles zal je smaak zijn, maar dan nog is verrast worden altijd beter dan in de rij staan…)

Het officiële programma van Left of the Dial vindt op vrijdag en zaterdag plaats tussen 16.00 uur en (ongeveer) middernacht, maar overdag hoef je je ook niet te vervelen. Ben je nog nooit in Rotterdam geweest dan is een beetje rondlopen al leuk, want het is echt een prachtige stad, maar als je zin hebt in meer muziek, ga dan naar The Official Unofficial. Officieel is dit gratis festival geen onderdeel van Left of the Dial, maar we steunen onze onofficiële vrienden volledig en we raden iedereen aan om bij een van hun concerten te gaan kijken!

Ben je meer zoals wij en post je gewoon random heel af en toe iets omdat het écht leuk is, mag je ons natuurlijk ook taggen. Tijdens Left of the Dial zijn we waarschijnlijk veel te druk om het te zien, maar we worden er heel erg blij van om door alle jullie foto’s en filmpjes te scrollen als we op zondag na het festival in bed liggen bij te komen!

In short: Left of the Dial is a 3-day multivenue festival in the centre of Rotterdam that showcases the best new music. This means that you’ll be running from venue to venue (all indoors) to see loads of artists you’ve probably never heard of, but will soon learn to love.

The two things we care about most is music and the well-being of all living creatures, so it’s very simple: be kind to your fellow-festivalgoer, don’t break stuff and show your appreciation for the Left of the Dial artists any way you can. If we all stick to these basic rules, we’re going to have a great time!

Your ticket is a 3-day pass. At the ticket desk you exchange it for a wristband which grants you access to all festival venues all days, with the exception of a few special events like Bands on a Boat for which you need an additional ticket.

If you purchase a group ticket, you’ll get 6 tickets for the price of 5. You’ll receive 6 individual tickets, so each member of your group can collect their wristband whenever they want.

When Left of the Dial is officially sold out and you still need a ticket, please try Ticketswap, the only resell platform that will guarantee you purchasing official tickets. You absolutely don’t have to, but to enhance your Left of the Dial experience, we have some ‘add-ons’: Tickets for additional events that take place during the weekend, like Bands on a Boat, or Dine Like a Star.

Please double check if you have your tickets well before arriving (preferably right now!) Can’t find your tickets? No problem, email us and we’ll help you out. We just need the email address with which you’ve purchased the tickets and we’ll resend them.

Of course, you can wear whatever you want at Left of the Dial. We’re not the Met Gala, no one cares. However, there are a few things you might want to consider when deciding on your outfit. October weather is unpredictable. We had amazing sunny days and we had non-stop pouring rain, so layer up and just to be sure pack a waterproof jacket. Also, it would be smart to wear comfortable shoes, because chances are you’re going to walk a lot.

We love all the artists on the lineup, so we’re pretty sure that you can walk into any venue at any moment and have a great time, but if you want to familiarize yourself with your new favourite bands, or learn the lyrics so you can sing a long, please check out our different playlists on Bandcamp or on Spotify.

There are so many other things to do at Left of the Dial that we decided to dedicate a page to them. We advise you to have a look, because it’s a sure way to more fun and to get free stuff!

It’s wise to extra carefully read the newsletters you’ll receive in the week leading up to Left of the Dial. Here you’ll find last-minute changes and other important things, including emergency information.

We stopped printing booklets with the Left of the Dial timetable, because we always printed way too much and we hate wasting paper. So please, either print your own, or download our app. Admittedly, not the most fancy app in the world of festival apps, but it has plenty of features that will make planning your festival easier.

We strongly suggest that you take public transportation, ride a bicycle, or take a cab/Uber to Left of the Dial. These are the most effective, environmentally sound, and neighbourly methods to get to the centre of Rotterdam. Besides, parking spaces are scarce and expensive. The ticket desk where you exchange your e-ticket for a wristband is located a 10 minute walk from Central Station, or take Tram 4.

If you need directions, just tell anyone you’re looking for the infamous Butt Plug Gnome statue (seriously!) and they will point you right to the location of our ticket desk.

At the ticket desk you present your e-ticket to our staff and they will hand you your wristband. No need to print your ticket as long as you have it on your phone. The wristband will grant you access to all Left of the Dial venues for all 3 days with the exception of special events like Bands on a Boat or Dine Like a Star for example, for which you need an additional ticket.

Opening hours of the ticket desk:

Thursday 17.00 - 22.00h (first show: 19.00h)
Friday 15.00 - 21.00h (first show: 16.00h)
Saturday 15.00 - 21.00h (first show: 16.00h)

Usually, the longest queue is on Thursday between 18.00 and 19.00h, so if there's an early show you definitely don't want miss, collect your wristband as soon as the ticket desk opens.

Once you’ve got your wristband, you’re free to roam from venue to venue. Walking distances from the ticket desk to the different venues vary from 3 to roughly 20 minutes.

All venues have a limited capacity, so if you absolutely want to see a certain show, come early, or try to get your hands on a priority pass. Most bands play more than one show (marked with # in the timetable), so usually you’ll get another chance to see them. Some venues are really tiny and more likely to be at capacity soon, so it’s worth checking our venue overview which also includes the accessibility and the beer prices of each venue.

Stay hydrated, eat well and get some rest whenever you feel you need it. If you need help in any way, please talk to our bar staff, our volunteers, or our security team. Also remember: the best way to take care of yourself is by having fun!

Left of the Dial has been known for its huge sense of community and we really like to keep it that way. As soon as we open our doors, the festival is all yours and it’s up to you to make it the best ever. So, be respectful, accept that some people are more outgoing than others and if you accidentally bump into someone, apologize. Oh, and if you’re planning to mosh, learn the pit etiquette (most importantly, if someone falls down, pick them up!)

Being on stage can be tough and the Left of the Dial artists are working really hard just for you, so cheer them on, sing a long, dance, follow them on social media, buy merchandise, and please, never ever use their shows as a moment to loudly catch up with your friends about your weekend plans. All our artists are usually very approachable, so don’t hesitate to compliment them after the show, they will really appreciate it.

So many awesome artists are performing, if one venue is at capacity, move on to the next. Chances are you’ll be pleasantly surprised. (Or maybe not pleasantly at all, but still, being surprised is usually a good thing. And better than queueing…)

The official Left of the Dial shows on Friday and Saturday take place between 16.00h and midnight-ish, but you don’t have to get bored during the day. Of course, you can go sightseeing as Rotterdam is an amazing city, but if you’re up for more music, check out The Official Unofficial festival. Officially this free daytime festival is not part of Left of the Dial, however we fully support our unofficial friends and we highly recommend checking out their events!
