Since forming in 2020, Vancouver-based quintet Hillsboro has carved out a place in the Canadian DIY scene with their kinetic live presence. In the summer of 2024 Hillsboro released the explosive EP White Trash, a follow up to the group’s 2023 debut album and the first large-scale release on their label, play dead. White Trash captured the band’s sharpest material to date and drew attention from both press and audiences beyond their local scene. In just a few years, Hillsboro has taken their sound on the road across western North America, sharing the stage with Canadian staples such as Preoccupations, Emma Goldman, and Pink Mountaintops. Built on a foundation of distorted basslines, intricate guitar work, and walls of atmospheric violin, Hillsboro blends influences from alternative rock, emo, and shoegaze into a sound both familiar and wholly their own. Often shifting between murky atmospheres and sudden bursts of intensity, it’s frontman Nima Walker’s vocals that anchor the group’s emotional core, creating a style that feels both rough-edged and deeply personal.
Over the past year, Hillsboro has brought this energy to festival stages, including appearances at Treefort Music Fest, Sled Island, Philips Backyard, and Pleasant Day, solidifying themselves as one of Vancouver’s most promising emerging acts. Carrying this momentum forward, the band has new music, A Party In Your Name, rolling out through 2025 and into 2026. Hillsboro also started their own label, play dead, in 2024, which has since become a staple across the PNW. play dead has released records for some of the largest up and coming acts in Vancouver, and is looking forward to continued growth across 2026.
