Alt pop singer-songwriter and producer Rian Brazil is carving out his own lane. With his intuitive creative process, which prioritises fluid artistry and organic exploration over rules, the artist crafts songs that can span everything from rave-inflected dance tracks, to alternative rap and spoken world, to earnest, piano-bound ballads.
After years traversing the musical underground in his hometown of Brighton, the artist relocated to London and kickstarted his career with a residency at the now-shuttered members’ club Laylow. After independently releasing his music on social media, he went on to introduce himself as a solo artist with his four-track EP People like u in 2025.
With co-signs from publications like i-D and Clash, People like u served as a tribute to Brazil’s earliest musical memories: growing up in a household saturated with the club-ready tunes of his mother, a former happy hardcore raver, and her ex-husband, a drum and bass DJ. The four-tracker includes the trance-inflected ‘Close 2 u’ and the balladic anthem ‘Breathe’, debuting Brazil as a chameleonic creative force.
Now, the artist is preparing to drop a new mixtape, Engine Heartbreak, which will centre his voice as a malleable instrument. Able to modulate his vocals in real time, the eight-track release spotlights his technical capabilities as a vocalist: his performance on each song is markedly distinct, his versatility makes it seem like a plethora of guest vocalists are working across the mixtape. Across a range of genres, sparse production allows his voice to take centre stage, while his imagistic approach to song-writing underscores moments of vulnerability and vivid emotion.
