The word “weltschmerz” appears several times in the vocabulary of Euroboy, a new project led by Doortje Hiddema (who we’ve come to know from bands like Real Derek and LGHTNNG). Don’t worry, the mascara tears are just the opening curtain of Ok Mom, which is more or less a dark coming of age comedy translated into blithe post-punk vignettes. Sounding like the best parts of Deerhunter, The Slits, Cate le Bon and Eleanor Friedberger, Hiddema processes melancholy with wry reflections and bovine coping mechanisms. Apart from some occasional squeaky guitar and haphazard recorder solo, Euroboy is annoyingly catchy in the best way possible.
