Dit jaar begint Left of the Dial al op woensdag!
Daar zal heus niet iedereen zin in hebben en er is ook maar beperkt plek, dus als je drie dagen Left of the Dial meer dan genoeg vindt, stop gerust met lezen. Er verandert voor jou helemaal niks en je bent gewoon op donderdag 22 oktober welkom bij onze ticketbalie.
Heb je in principe wel zin om woensdagavond al aan het festival te beginnen? Lees dan vooral nog even verder voor de belangrijkste informatie die je nodig hebt om te beslissen of je erbij wil zijn:
LOCAL OPENING SHOWCASE
Op woensdagavond zijn alleen Rotown en Bar3 open en er spelen alleen Rotterdamse bands.
HELEMAAL GRATIS, WEL EEN TICKET NODIG
De avond is gratis voor iedereen die een Left of the Dial-ticket heeft, maar omdat er maar beperkt plek is, moet je wel een extra (gratis) ticket bestellen. Op het mailadres waarmee je je Left of the Dial-ticket hebt besteld, ontvang je op 31 maart een speciale code waarmee je dit kunt doen.
Voor de zekerheid: je moet dus wel al een Left of the Dial 2026-ticket hebben, heb je die nog niet bestel ‘m dan hier
EN DAN NU DE VEEL TE LANGE UITLEG
Als je aan deze informatie al genoeg had om te beslissen of je er bij bent of niet, kun je vanaf hier stoppen met lezen en je mist geen essentiële informatie. Maar voor iedereen die wil weten wáárom we dit doen, nog wat nadere toelichting:
Waarom alleen Rotterdamse bands?
We willen het publiek tijdens Left of the Dial graag zoveel mogelijk kennis laten maken met artiesten die ze normaal gesproken niet zo snel zouden kunnen zien. In het begin kwamen onze bezoekers vooral uit Rotterdam en omgeving, dus was het logischer om bands te programmeren die van verder weg kwamen. Als die bezoekers wilden, zouden ze meeste Rotterdamse bands immers regelmatig in de buurt kunnen zien spelen. Daarom hebben we het aantal lokale acts altijd tot een minimum beperkt.
Wat is er dan veranderd?
Inmiddels komt de helft van de bezoekers van (veel) verder weg. Bovendien komen er ook steeds meer buitenlandse muziekprofessionals die artiesten kunnen helpen aan meer shows, een platencontract, of andere dingen die handig zijn voor een muziekcarrière. Al die mensen krijgen veel minder vaak de kans om Rotterdamse artiesten te zien. En misschien wat laat, maar uiteindelijk kwamen we tot de conclusie dat dat toch best zonde is. We zijn een Rotterdams festival en we zijn trots op de artiesten in de stad, dus daar mogen we best wat meer ons best voor doen, vonden we.
Waarom op de woensdag?
De afgelopen jaren waren veel van de buitenlandse kaartkopers al op woensdag in Rotterdam, dus het leek ons handig om deze avond te kiezen. We kunnen natuurlijk ook gewoon meer Rotterdamse artiesten op de andere dagen programmeren, maar dan moeten ze opboksen tegen alle buitenlandse bands en we gunnen onze lokale vrienden dit keer juist wat meer aandacht.
Is dat de enige reden?
Niet helemaal. Die buitenlandse muziekprofessionals waar we het over hadden, gaan over het algemeen liever op woensdag naar bands kijken dan op zaterdag. Gewoon, omdat ze voor hun werk al ontzettend veel op pad zijn en zij het fijn vinden om af en toe ook eens een weekend thuis te zijn. Wij willen het ze zo makkelijk mogelijk maken om Rotterdamse artiesten te zien, dus dat is ook een goeie reden om al op woensdag te beginnen.
Rotown en Bar3 zijn niet heel groot, gaat dat goed komen?
Het blijft natuurlijk een experiment. We hebben geen idee of jullie hierop zitten te wachten, of juist totaal niet. Misschien blijkt Rotown veel te klein te zijn, misschien staan we straks alleen met het Left of the Dial-team voor het podium, het kan allebei. Daarom vragen we iedereen echt alléén een ticket te bestellen als je er zeker bij kunt zijn en het vooral ook te laten weten als dat ticket toch niet gebruikt gaat worden. En als het ondanks al onze goeie bedoelingen toch geen succes blijkt te zijn, wordt het vanzelf donderdag. Dan gaat Left of the Dial op de normale manier van start en zijn we het zo vergeten!

We realise that not everyone will have the energy for an extra festival night, and also, capacity will be limited, so if three days of Left of the Dial already sounds like more than enough to you, feel free to stop reading right here. On Wednesday evening only Rotown and Bar3 will be open, and the lineup will consist entirely of Rotterdam-based bands.
COMPLETELY FREE, BUT YOU’LL NEED A TICKET
The evening is free for everyone who already has a Left of the Dial ticket. However, because capacity is limited, you’ll still need to reserve an additional (free) ticket. On March 31, the email address you used to purchase your Left of the Dial ticket will receive a special code that allows you to claim your ticket.

If the information above is already enough for you to decide whether you’ll join us or not, you can safely stop reading here and you won’t miss anything essential. But for anyone curious about why we’re doing this, please allow us to explain:
Why only Rotterdam bands?
At Left of the Dial, we try to introduce audiences to artists they might not normally get the chance to see live. At first, most of our ticketholders came from Rotterdam and the surrounding area, so we tried to give them loads of foreign bands to get to know. After all, they could catch most local bands in venues nearby throughout the year. So, it seemed like a perfectly good reason to keep those local artists to a minimum.
So what changed?
Nowadays, more and more ticketholders come from abroad, including a wide variety of music professionals who can open doors to more shows, record deals, and all the other things that help build a career in music. All those people rarely get the chance to see Rotterdam artists, so to put it a bit dramatic: we’re basically denying our own local community the chances we offer bands from further away. We may not be too fond of chauvinism, but this is kind of the other end of the spectrum.
Why Wednesday?
Now, we could simply have started putting more Rotterdam artists on the lineup, but we felt that, to make up for lost time, we should give our local stars some extra spotlight this year.
Is that the only reason to add the Wednesday?
No, that’s not the only reason we decided to add the Wednesday specifically. Like we said, the festival attracts quite a few music professionals, and many of them prefer to check out bands on a Wednesday rather than on a Saturday. Simply because their jobs already have them travelling and attending shows constantly, and every now and then it’s nice to spend a weekend at home. So that’s another good motivation to start a day earlier.
Rotown and Bar3 aren’t exactly huge, will that work?
Well, all said and done, it’s an experiment. We have no idea yet whether adding a local focused Wednesday is something you’ll be excited about. Maybe Rotown will be at capacity in no time, or maybe the only people there will be the Left of the Dial team. Both are very possible. But there’s only one way to find out, so we figured we’re just going to give it a try this year!
