Jullie zijn ongetwijfeld bekend met het fenomeen De Top 2000 Allertijden die elk jaar tussen Kerst en Oud & Nieuw wordt uitgezonden. Het heeft ons altijd een beetje verwonderd dat als je uit alle nummers van de wereld kunt kiezen, mensen toch en masse op Bohemian Rhapsody stemmen. Niks ten nadele van Queen, maar het zou toch leuk zijn als er soms iets anders op de radio te horen zou zijn…

Nu weten we ook wel dat we de wereld niet helemaal naar onze hand kunnen zetten, maar het leek ons zo leuk als we dit jaar Left of the Dial – het liedje van The Replacements ergens in de onderste regionen van de Top 2000 zouden kunnen krijgen. Schijnbaar heb je daar al duizenden stemmen voor nodig, dus de kans is klein dat het daadwerkelijk lukt, maar we kunnen het proberen!

Als jullie ons willen helpen met deze vrij hoog gegrepen missie, ga dan naar Radio 2 en vul op het stemformulier The Replacements – Left of the Dial in.

Een echt goeie reden hebben we er niet voor, maar het zou toch mooi zijn als we straks dingen kunnen roepen als “waar een klein festival groot in kan zijn” of “dit is de kracht van verenigde muziekliefhebbers”, of iets in die richting.  

Gezien de website van de Top 2000 volledig in het Nederlands is, hebben we voor onze niet-Nederlands sprekende vrienden een uitleg gemaakt:

Every year between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, a Dutch Radio station presents the ‘Top 2000 of All Times’.

People get to send in their absolute favourite songs which normally leads to quite a predictable list of 2,000 songs. This has been a tradition for 25 years, and usually the top 10 consists of more or less the same songs, with Bohemian Rhapsody on the number one spot no less than 20 (!) times.

Even though you don’t need a radio station to play your favourite songs nowadays, it’s still a big deal here. People actually take the time to make sure Hotel California gets played on the radio.

Puzzling, we know.

Now, we realise that we can’t change the inevitable but we thought it would be cool if this year, we somehow manage to get Left of the Dial somewhere in the low regions of this Top 2000.

Of course, it would be even cooler to get in a Left of the Dial band, but we’ve had over 400 bands on and we couldn’t pick a favourite even if our lives were depending on it. And if you all start voting for different bands none of them will make the list, because apparently it requires thousands of votes for even a 1999-spot.

So we need unity.

Please, join us in this pointless mission to get ‘The Replacements – Left of the Dial’ a chart entry. For no other reason than to show the world that there’s more music out there worth listening to and to maybe, just maybe convince radio DJs to start playing more Left of the Dial bands throughout the year.
