Take a step back

Ugly (UK)

"Raucous jangly melodies perfect for a basement bar moshpit."

Bio provided by artist:
“Originally hailing from Cambridge, now residing in London – Ugly have been using downtime to craft a sound true to their own. Fusing inspiration from various backgrounds of Choral, Post-Rock and the staples of the 60s/70s, Ugly’s take on the writing process is unique and constantly moving forward.”

Introducing alt-rock powerhouse UGLY to the Toast roster today with ‘Hands of Man.’ The group have become renowned amongst peers for their shape shifting sound that blends experimental post-rock with swelling choral textures. Today’s track was produced at Church Studios by Balázs Altsach, assistant to Paul Epworth who has worked on music for The Last Dinner Party, Wet Leg & Blur.

Hailing from Cambridge and its surrounding areas, UGLY originally evolved through the band’s choral background. Glimmers of its influence can be heard throughout their catalogue – instantly gripping infectious melodies, explosive dynamic changes and rich, intricate harmonies.

Speaking on today’s release, the band say “The lyrics weren’t heavily inspired by a narrative in the traditional sense – more a noted feeling of the time, years passing much quicker than you’d like but trying to use them wisely to work on yourself and the way you are to others. We tend to shy away from lyrics that tell an obvious story and rely on themes that evoke a feeling or image, coupled with what feels the most exciting phonetically.”

“The decision to make the final chorus sung in unison by all 4 singers of the band was to create a powerful and united sound which exaggerates the feeling of the song and repetition of the lyrics. This sort of vocal is a styling that Ugly have been exploring in other tracks alongside exploration into harmonically and rhythmically challenging vocals which is slowly becoming the band’s forte.

Having just wrapped a UK tour with Black Country, New Road, the band are gearing up for their own headline show at the 100 Club, coming up soon on the 11th of December. Look out for more from UGLY in 2024.
